A secular definition of the term would be that which is highly revered and protected. For example, some families could consider the family to be sacred.
A religious definition could vary indefinitely, but a common definition would be something along the lines of that which is sacred is that which is divine, or supernatural in some sense related to whatever may be considered godlike.
