There will be no summer Chant Intensive so this is your only chance in 2011 to experience the full immersion in the world of Gregorian chant, as taught by Scott Turkington and William Mahrt, January 3-7, 2011, Old St. Patrick’s Church, New Orleans, Louisiana.
As you can see, the date is not that far off. There are limits on the numbers here, so if you are planning on coming, it is wise to lock in your spot right away. The great advantage of this program – all chant for a full week – is that it gives singers and directors the necessary confidence to sing in or direct any chant schola in any parish.
The lessons cover the full range of technique, including neume reading, psalm singing, and stylistic interpretation. It is also a great chance to develop a camaraderie with others in the burgeoning movement. A week might seem like a long time but it is something you do once in a lifetime, and it teaches you to produce the most beautiful musical art of all.
Added bonus that needs no explanation: it is in New Orleans!!
Why is there no summer Chant Intensive?
I was looking forward to a Summer Chant Intensive, since the Winter intensives occur during my academic quarter.
Very disappointed.

Then either take time off school or take initiative and organize one yourself. I'm sure the CMAA can provide a teacher. Just organize everything, get registration money, etc. and they'll provide a teacher. Don't waste energy being "disappointed." Take initiative.
Second Anonymous: It's so easy for you to leave a snarky comment when you don't even sign your name.
"Take time off school" – have you ever been in school? I can't afford to do that, academically-speaking. Organize an Intensive myself? In my little podunk town in the middle of nowhere? Sure, I'll do that in my spare time after I've finished my classwork, my church job work, and homeschooling my kids.
Yeah. You must be very young.
There has been a Summer Chant Intensive every year for the past three years. I don't know whether or not that will continue (I assume that it will), but just check out http://www.musicasacra.com
We recently had a chant workshop in our Diocese, and it was mentioned that there had been some difficulty in scheduling a summer chant intensive because of how late Corpus Christi falls this year. I think the conflict is that the chant intensive is usually held prior to the Colloquium, but that is Corpus Christi weekend and most people involved need to be in their parishes. I might be wrong, but that is what I heard, and I mention it to give hope… I believe there will be future summer intensive workshops!
I, too, am disappointed. Even though our diocese, and my parish, have taken the initiative and had workshops here, the week-long opportunity is something really precious. I am in my first year of teaching at this high school, and I can't take off for a week. But… circumstances indicate God's Will at times, so it is not meant to happen right now. Prayers and blessings for all who can attend the winter chant intensive!
Mary, just FYI, I do know that all the CMAA people have 1-3 day jobs, and families, and all they do is volunteer. So don't be too hard on them.
Anonymous, thanks for the reminder. I am quite aware of that, and did not say anything that could be construed as "hard on them".
