Lord’s Prayer, three options (reposted)

Still trying to figure out what posts Blogger destroyed, but I do think this one is among them.

These are the three Lord’s Prayers in the new Missal, and none of them are the one familiar today.

  1. I prefer to reserve the Abba Pater tune for the Latin words, because the Abba Pater tune with English words (the first example in this post) sounds too similar to the Snow setting. We tried it once and everyone got confused. I think a few people just switched to Latin halfway through because it was so confusing.

  2. Why switch from the Snow setting? It serves the text well. For many parishes, it is the ONLY chant known and sung by the people. Come next November, there will plenty of new tunes to absorb. Why tamper with the Lord's Prayer and add to the confusion?

    Fortunately, we will have some continuity. Unfortunately, I think it might prevent learning of these other settings in parishes.

  4. "Since faithful from different countries come together ever more frequently, it is fitting that they know how to sing together at least some parts of the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin, especially the Creed and the Lord's Prayer, set to the simpler melodies." GIRM art41

    It is interesting how this "different countries" idea modifies the intended meaning of SC 54 which states:
    "…steps should be taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them."

    Be this as it may, it is clear that the preference in both is for the Our Father to be chanted in Latin. So why is there all this emphasis in the corrected English translation on singing the Our Father in English with different tunes when Latin Catholics should be striving for the sake of universality at the least, and obedient to the conciliar documents at best, to chant the Our Father in Latin which is now considered part of the Ordinary?

  5. It is my understanding that the "Snow setting" (thank heavens his name wasn't Sunn) will remain in published worship aids (Missalette, Today's Missal, etc.). Not sure about it being in the Missal though….there was mention of it in the preface letter about the ICEL chants but only to say that it would be approved.

  6. Aahh! I stand corrected… I had thought that the music files being referred to were sent to publishers of music resources, not the Missal publishers. So there will be FOUR versions in the Missal?

  7. I would assume that for the US edition there will be four settings. As to where it would be placed (Order of Mass or an appendix) I don't know. I'm sure Fr. Ruff would be the person to ask.

    I for one would like to have a sense of what all is included in the US adaptations, especially musically (the same article said the Christmas Proclamation would be included, for instance).
