  1. Agreed.

    Speaking from the contemporary side of sacred music, I never liked being in front of people waving my arms and making faces. Better and more fun–not to mention musically enlightening–for the ensemble members to be playing and singing together based on musicianship and shared responsibility.

    But you're right–he's not exactly overwhelming them with waving, gnashing of teeth, etc…

  3. I'm not sure I would call it a new trend, exactly. It has its place, and so does having a conductor. For a group of this size and ability, having a dedicated conductor would be overkill. I would think most reasonable choral conductors would agree.
