Gregorian Chant: A Guide, by Dom Daniel Saulnier

I’m so pleased to announce the publication of Gregorian Chant: A Guide, by Dom Daniel Saulnier, newly published on the 1,000-year anniversary of the Solesmes monastery. This masterful presentation covers the history, structure, theology, liturgical function, and spirituality of the core music of the Roman Rite. The translation by Professor Edward Schaefer was first published in 2003 by Solesmes and went out of print. The CMAA has revived it as a means of educating a new generation of singers in the English-speaking world.

  1. This is so wonderful.

A note to our readers here: Almost always when I go to Fr. Columba Kelly with a question about the chant he refers me to this little volume by Saulnier. I have read it before and have referenced it often, and every time I go back I see something new. Don't let the small size of this book make you think that it's a light read. It is packed with insight! Read the footnotes. Study it carefully. It is an absolute wealth. A must-read for anyone who wants to get serious about Gregorian chant.

  2. Is this the same book as Saulnier's Gregorian Chant: A Guide to the History and Liturgy, translated by Dr. Mary Berry and available from Paraclete Press?

Yes it is, although this version is translated by Edward Schaefer.
