As if I wasn't thrilled enough that the Latin Offertory antiphon was chanted, I hear Bp. Barber reciting the Offertory prayers in Latin! Deo gratias!
Is this the liturgical and musical norm in California? if so, it was decidedly eccentric. The so-called Te Deum at the end sounded like 'Sing a new church into being' . Charles might well pray "O keep getting better" but I can't help reflecting that it could hardly have been worse. Are people actually being paid to deliver this kind of thing? Throwing in a Latin antiphon is hardly compensation for the general awfulness. On this showing, it will take at least three centuries to put things right.
Ah well, I'm off to the Birmingham Oratory tomorrow for the Feast of St Philip Neri and liturgical sanity. Deo Gratias.

I think we need to be happy with whatever 'gains' we make, be it in sanctity, musicianship, or both. Did not watch video. I'm also reflecting that Archbishop Sample's installation mass from several weeks ago contained much from the OCP catalogue. Baby-steps, brothers and sisters!
I agree wholeheartedly. Move in the right direction. Do what you can. Like Mother Teresa, spell "success" F-A-I-T-H-F-U-L-N-E-S-S.
And things are moving forward liturgically even in such a diocese and even – contrary to the fears of some – during the pontificate of Pope Francis. It would be great to transform every cathedral, even every parish, into Birmingham Oratory overnight. But it was NEVER going to happen that way. NOT even under Pope Benedict.
Agreed, it was not everything it should have been. But it was significantly better than most such events that have been broadcast on EWTN. The celebrant sang his parts; the choir sang two fully Gregorian propers well. A serious piece was sung as a communion motet (Colin Mawby's Ave verum corpus, though it was hard to hear, because the commentator took the occasion to tell us all about the architecture of the cathedral, hardly a suitable communion meditation). I would hazard a guess that the music budget at this cathedral exceeds that of the Birmingham Oratory, so it's not a matter of resources. However, the Oratorians in London and Birmingham made a conscious decision to maintain their liturgical and musical patrimony, and these things when lost are not easily recovered. Throwing everything into the mix in the hope of pleasing everybody isn't the way forward, however.
But JP, what if there were no elements of the patrimony a year ago? What if a year from now there are more? I've been trying in my chuch for going on 2 years now. It's a push-pull, 3-steps-forward/2-steps-back dance that we're doing.
