New Organ Recording: Influences, by Jonathan Ryan

CMAA Board Member and Colloquium Faculty member Jonathan Ryan announces the release of a new solo organ recording available now!

Recorded on a specifically chosen European pipe organ famous for its brilliant fusion of German, French, and English Romantic styles, the repertoire centers around music with significant influences from another style or nationality, and which additionally makes strong connections between North America and Europe.

Included are major works by Healey Willan and Marcel Dupre: the German-inspired Introduction, Passacaglia, and Fugue, Op. 149 and Gregorian-chant based Symphonie-Passion, Op. 23 respectively.

Also featured is a commissioned piece by renowned English composer Philip Moore, and the recording premiere of Ride in a High Speed Train by contemporary Dutch composer Ad Wammes.

Colloquium attendees heard two of these works in Jonathan’s 2015 Colloquium recital at St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh, PA.

TO SING WITH THE ANGELS: A HISTORY OF THE TWIN CITIES CATHOLIC CHORALE

A signature volume chronicling the history of the Twin Cities Catholic Chorale, founded in 1955 by the then Father Richard J. Schuler.  The Chorale is now in its 42ndseason of singing with professional orchestra the great Classical and Romantic Masses of composers like Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert as a part of the liturgy of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in Latin at the Church of Saint Agnes in Saint Paul, Minnesota.  
This book also recounts the important role that Monsignor Schuler played in the area of sacred music in the post-Vatican II Church.  It was his heroic commitment, through word and deed, to the authentic implementation of Sacrosanctum Concilium. the document on music and liturgy of the Second Vatican Council, that helped keep the patrimony of Catholic sacred music alive in the United States for a new Renaissance.  When Monsignor Schuler was accused of living in the past, he often said that he was rather forty years ahead of the times.   And he is being proven correct.

Summer Chant Intensive Registration Now Open

Announcing Summer Chant Intensive 2015
Duquesne University – Pittsburgh, PA
June 23-26, 2015

Make plans to join us at Duquesne University again this summer for the Summer Chant Intensive!

This summer’s course will be taught by instructor Wilko Brouwers, from the Netherlands, in one section including men and women. In addition to the sessions on chant, this year’s course will also offer breakout sessions by Dr. Ann Labounsky on organ improvisation, as well as a concert on Thursday evening combining chant and organ improvisation.

Compline will be sung to allow participants to experience the beauty of a portion of the sung Divine Office. Gregorian repertoire will be used for Divine Office, the closing Mass on Friday and for a concert on Thursday evening.

St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir Tour in USA

The St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir (London, U.K.) will be making a major tour through eight cities in the U.S. during the month of April 2015.

There has been a choir at St Paul’s Cathedral since 1127. Thirty boy choristers and twelve vicars choral provide music for eight sung services a week with regular recordings and broadcasts. The choir is regarded as one of the best in the world and regularly leads services of British national importance from State occasions such as the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen to the funeral of Baroness Thatcher.

For many years St Paul’s Cathedral has held a close relationship with the USA. It is home to the American Memorial Chapel and hosts the annual Thanksgiving Service for the American Community in London. Indeed it was the first British cathedral choir ever to visit the United States (in the year of The Queen’s coronation, 1953).

This tour will be the choir’s first visit to the USA in twelve years and marks the first of three visits over the next 6 years. The choir is active in communicating updates on its work. You can follow their progress via the following channels:

St. Dominic Church in DC Hosts Advent Stations

The Dominican Parish of St. Dominic in Washington, DC is having its first annual Advent Stations on Saturday, December 13, at 7:00pm. Similar to an evening of lessons and carols, the night of Advent Stations will include both songs and scriptural readings relevant to Christ’s coming.

Br. Athanasius Murphy, OP, who is helping initiate this seasonal celebration, commented on the event: “This is one attempt to help Christians participate in the Church’s celebration of the Lord’s coming at a local level. We hope the night helps to prepare those coming for their celebration of Christmas.”

The setting of the Advent Stations will be in a dark church with many candles near the sanctuary. Readings and short preaching will alternate with hymns, chant, and polyphony music traditional to the Advent season. The night will conclude with a candlelit procession to a Marian altar in the church to venerate a piece of the original manger of Christ’s nativity in Bethlehem.

Worth their lessons in learning

Workshop and Retreat – Ramona, CA

On Saturday, November 29, the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Ramona, CA will offer a day-long workshop and retreat called Adventus Dona – Gifts of the Advent.

The workshop will be divided into two parts – adult, taught by Dr. John Naples, and youth – taught by Mary Ann Carr Wilson. The workshop will focus on rehearsing the chants for the Advent season in both Latin and English. The day will culminate in a sung Mass in the Ordinary form for the 1st Sunday of Advent, followed by Vespers in the Extraordinary form including Adoration and Benediction.

As a special treat for the participants, there will be a presentation by the Society of St. John Chrysostom on the vestments and vessels of the Eastern and Western Church. Additionally, John Polhamus of the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego will present an introduction to Vespers in the Extraordinary form.

A Continental breakfast, Fiesta Lunch and afternoon snack will all be provided along with a complete music booklet. Registration for the course is $40.
