Richard Scott makes the argument that there are intriguing parallels between chant and rap (a term he uses inclusive of contemporary dance/pop styles). Reading through this, I’m intrigued – and of course he is right that the Gaudeamus chant and the riff in Lady Gaga’s song “Bad Romance” have the same melodic pattern.
A Different Kind of World Youth Day
David Hughes of St. Mary’s Norwalk provides the report:
The main English speaking Masses, on Wednesday the 17th and Thursday the 18th, will be sung by the St. Mary’s Student Schola of Norwalk, CT; the Sisters of Life Schola; and others. When accepting the invitation to come to Madrid, I made our participation contingent on singing the propers; therefore the proper Introit, Offertory, and Communio will be sung each day. Responsorial psalms are to a Gregorian tone, with Theodore Marier’s fauxbourdon for the verses. Alleluias are (in a pastoral concession) to the mode vi triple Alleluia (which is of course proper only to the Easter Vigil); but the Alleluia verse each day will be chanted melismatically. Motets are by Josquin, Palestrina, Victoria, Byrd, and Mozart.

OCP Puts Square Noted Gregorian Chant on Psalm Book
This might appear to be only a symbol, and it is true that what’s in between the covers is not much changed, but actually this is serious and substantial. It signals a changed and changing culture of the Catholic music world, and OCP is nothing if not market savvy.
Gregorian chant here has the main place on the book cover. Next step is giving it the main place in the actual music of the liturgy.

New GIRM 2011 at the USCCB
A comment on this blog points this the new GIRM at the USCCB website. This is the document that makes the Latin text much clearer. It includes a firmer declaration concerning the centrality of Gregorian chant, a broadened permission to sing the Gradual instead of the Responsorial Psalm, and a much-constrained environment for the use of non-liturgical music and texts. In fact, a plain reading of this document would raise serious questions about most all music (and texts in music) that one hears in most any Catholic parish today.
